What is the difference between a prestressed concrete pole and a reinforced concrete pole?
A reinforced concrete (RC) pole contains passive steel reinforcing bars that provide tensile resistance after cracking occurs. A prestressed concrete pole contains high-strength steel strand or wire that is tensioned before casting, placing the concrete under permanent compression. This precompression prevents cracking under normal service loads, resulting in a stiffer, more crack-resistant, less permeable, and longer-lasting structural member than an ordinary RC pole of equivalent size.
What cross-section shapes are available for prestressed concrete poles?
The most common form is the circular hollow (spun) pole, produced by centrifugal casting. This cross-section provides equal strength in all horizontal directions — important for poles subject to wind loads from variable directions. Rectangular, square, hexagonal, and octagonal solid cross-sections can also be produced using the long-line pretensioning method and are typically used for shorter pole lengths (up to approximately 12m).
How are prestressed concrete poles installed?
